In 2014, a mutual writing friend introduced us to each other, saying that having spoken to both of us, it was clear to her that we shared a vision and should talk. That friend turned out to be right. We both wanted to create a space for writers to retreat to, somewhere that would nourish and encourage them, would foster their learning and boost their confidence. It needed to be set in beautiful surroundings, to be a safe space, with good food and plenty of support. Shortly after we met and talked, The Writing Retreat was born, and we’ve been delivering on that vision ever since.
We know what it means to be a writer, how it feels when you're struggling and battling that nagging voice that says you can't do this, that you're not good enough. But we've worked with so many writers who have fought this same battle, and we know that it has nothing to do with lack of talent or ability or promise, and everything to do with simply not (yet) having access to all the tricks of the trade. We're here to teach you those tricks of the trade, and to be here for you throughout your entire writing journey. We look forward to working with you.
I’m a writer, tutor and editor, and the author of The Bycatch Principle, a conspiracy thriller pitched at the young (and not so young) adult reader. After a decade of living and travelling in Asia, and seventeen years spent working as a school teacher, I gained a distinction for my Master’s Degree in Professional Writing in 2007. I’ve been teaching writing to adults ever since.
My favourite forms of writing are the short story and the novel, but I enjoy working with writers across the spectrum. When I'm not teaching, I can be found out and about with Becks, our writing retreat dog, parked up somewhere in my campervan, scribbling away or editing. I look forward to working with you.

I've been a writer for as long as I can remember, from stories at school, to copywriting and journalism, guidebooks and poetry. I've been teaching writers full-time since 2009, drawing on my own professional expertise as a writer and qualifications to Masters level (with distinction). On a typical day you'll find me in my garden office, teaching and writing, my two favourite activities. During lockdown I was struck by how much we need our creative outlets. Writing is one of the most accessible; you just need a pen or laptop, a quiet spot, an idea that fires your imagination, and off you go. My job is to keep you motivated and show you the skills of creative writing that make it satisfying. I can't wait to work with you.
