Our Stay Home Sundays offer three half-day themed sessions that take place using the Zoom app. If you haven’t used Zoom before, just download it here and have a practice with a friend beforehand. It’s easy to use and is the next best thing to being together in real life.
The Stay Home Autumn Sundays 2021 are themed around writing for children and young adults, from picture books for the very young, to adventures and topical stories for young readers and teens. Sessions start at 10.00am and finish at 1.00pm. We will open the Zoom meeting room at 9.45am and there will be regular breaks. Each session includes some tuition, writing time, and time for sharing and discussion. As always at The Writing Retreat, sharing is entirely optional.
Bring your pen and notebook, your choice of hot beverage and a snack for the break, and enjoy a morning of writing and learning in the company of our online community. We look forward to welcoming you into our Zoom room.
Picture Books: – Sunday 19 September
This retreat introduces you to writing for the youngest children, 0-6 years, from picture books to first readers and young series. We will explore the principles of writing for this age group, looking at examples of simple but engaging stories that lend themselves to illustration. We will look at how to map out a picture book page by page, creating stories that combine words and pictures to delight young readers.
Children’s Books: – Sunday 17 October
Fiction for young readers is closely targeted at specific age-groups: for example the lower end of the scale at 5-6 years, the higher end, 7-9 years, and fiction for 9-12 year olds. We will look at examples for each age group including junior and young teenage fiction, and illustrated books. You will learn the rules about word length, age-appropriate language, and themes and topics that appeal to young readers.
Young Adult Books: – Sunday 21 November
Young Adult fiction (YA) is the bridge from older children and young teen readers to older teens: the years in between from 13+ upwards. This retreat will highlight the themes and issues that typically engage YA readers; everything from the turbulent emotions of growing up, concerns about the environment and the importance of friendship and family, but also the attraction of fantasy and the power of being able to relate to strong and quirky lead characters.
