CANCELLED The Old Sawmills near Golant
Monday 23-Saturday 28 March 2020
Sadly we have had to cancel our Spring 2020 retreat because of the Coronavirus crisis, but we hope to return there in 2021. Please feel free to read our description of how it would have been in this stunningly beautiful and tranquil venue situated on its own private creek:
The topic for the week is (or would have been) ‘Crafting the Short Story’, with a focus on those transferable skills that this tight form of fiction brings into such sharp focus.
This retreat provides the time and space to write, far away from the distractions and demands of everyday life, while enjoying the company of other writers. Our optional morning workshops concentrate on unpicking the elements of the short story. Afternoons are free to put what you have learned into practice or to bury yourself in your own project, which may or not be to do with short fiction; the choice is yours. You can also relax, read, or go for long walks with your notebook. The Saints’ Way runs just above the house; perfect.
The week features scheduled optional one-to-one sessions with your tutors, where you can receive feedback on your work, brainstorm ideas, unravel a tricky plot point or discuss your writing aspirations. Evenings are for enjoying good company, with wine, delicious home cooked food, and stimulating conversations.
Our visiting author midweek is prize-winning short story writer and novelist Tom Vowler. Tom will join us for dinner on the Thursday evening and provide insight into his own writing journey. On Friday morning, Tom will run a masterclass on the short story, his specialty genre.
There are only six places on this retreat, and you can book your place here. Please read our terms and conditions here.
Also, please note that this is an unusual venue, with access being either by boat (when the tide is in), or on foot (a twenty minute walk through the woods). It therefore requires a reasonable level of mobility and won’t be suitable for everyone. Please contact us to discuss this further if you think access might be an issue for you.
NB: We are experiencing some glitches with our booking form process and some of the forms are not coming through to us. If you do complete a booking form, please also email us – thewritingretreat@btinternet.com – to notify us that you have done so. We can then contact you if your form fails to arrive. Apologies for the inconvenience.
